The availability of the Internet is nearly universal.  Internet service is available in homes, businesses, schools, coffee shops, airports and even some airplanes.  But, if you are wondering where to find Internet service in my area, the answer is nearly everywhere.  Internet service providers range from cable companies to telephone companies to Internet companies.  If you are trying to find Internet service in my area for the home or business, the type of connection you have may vary depending on your needs.  However, Internet service is highly accessible no matter where you are.

Home Internet Service

You will notice that there are a number of Internet service options available to choose from.  It may depend on the hardware you have available at home or your budget constraints.  But, here are a few of the home Internet connection options available today.

• Dial-up:  As the name suggests, dial-up is an Internet connection that is based on your telephone line.  A modem is used to actually dial into the Internet provider's modem which then connects to the Internet Protocol that shares information.  Dial-up was hugely popular when the general population first became acquainted with the Internet about twenty years ago.  However, dial-up is considered an antiquated mode of Internet access today because it transfers information at a slower rate than some newer Internet connection methods.
  
  
• DSL:  This is a much faster method of connecting and transferring information.  It can also work with a telephone line but it uses higher frequency bands than dial-up methods.  DSL stands for digital subscriber loop or digital subscriber line.  The higher frequency bands basically are separated into voice and data bands.  Like dial-up, DSL also utilizes a modem to connect the computer to the Internet.  Again, DSL was the preferred method to dial-up until some faster Internet connection methods were developed.
  
  
• Broadband:  This is a fast method of transferring information via the Internet that can be done through wireless methods.  A number of cable companies and telephone companies will offer broadband Internet services.  It is usually marketed as high-speed wireless Internet.  The technical definition of broadband involves the ability to have a bandwidth greater than one megahertz and the ability to accept data rates of more than one and a half megabits.
  
  
• Cable Internet:  This is a method of transferring information via the Internet with the use of cable television lines.  This is also considered a broadband method because of the speed.  Cable Internet is very popular in the United States.  A few of the cable companies that provide Internet service include Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications, Cable One, Charter Communications, Mediacom, RCN and Time Warner Cable.
  
  
• Wi-Fi:  Wi-Fi is a wireless Internet connection system that is overseen by the Wi-Fi Alliance.  This is a worldwide group made up of about 300 companies that are dedicated to the continued development of wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs)  What this means for you is if you have a computer, laptop, cell phone, video game or even printer with wireless connectivity, you can have wireless Internet access in an area that has Wi-Fi access.  Many times WiFi-access to the Internet is available in hotels, airports, coffee shops, restaurants and other businesses.  Sometimes there is a fee and sometimes the offering is free.
